Conch Republic Independence Celebration

April 17 @ 9:00 amApril 26 @ 11:59 pm

The Conch Republic Independence Celebration 2026 marks the 44th anniversary of Key West’s tongue-in-cheek secession from the United States. This 10-day festival is a masterclass in satire, island pride, and “FUN-dependence,” celebrating the moment in 1982 when Key West “declared war” on the U.S. (by throwing stale Cuban bread) to protest a Border Patrol blockade.

Festival Dates: April 17 – April 26, 2026

The celebration is packed with events that lean into the island’s maritime heritage and its “Sovereign State of Mind.”

What to Expect

The Vibe: This is arguably the most “local” of the major Key West festivals. It feels like a giant neighborhood block party where everyone is in on the joke.

Official Regalia: You can purchase official Conch Republic Passports, flags, and currency (which, while not legal tender, might occasionally get you a “local” discount at a friendly bar).

Pirate Presence: Expect to see plenty of “privateers” and pirates. The festival has a heavy maritime theme, and many events take place on the water or at the Key West Historic Seaport.

Political Satire: The festival remains rooted in its 1982 origins—a protest against government overreach. Speeches by the “Prime Minister” and “Secretary of State” are usually witty and filled with local inside jokes.

Pro-Tips for 2026

Headquarters: Make your first stop the Conch Republic HQ at the Historic Seaport. It’s the best place to get a physical “Pocket Guide” and your official commemorative merchandise.

The Sea Battle: If you want to actually be in the Sea Battle rather than just watching from Mallory Square, many local charter boats (like the Schooner Wolf) sell tickets to join the “Conch Navy” fleet.

April Weather: This is one of the best times to visit Key West. The humidity is lower than in the summer, and the water is warm enough for swimming but the air is still comfortable for the outdoor parades.
