Planning a vacation to the Florida Keys with your dog? You’re not alone—and you’re in the right place. With its breezy vibes, walkable towns, and open-air cafés, the Keys are one of the most dog-friendly destinations in Florida. But before you and your pup hit the Overseas Highway, there are a few things to know about keeping your dog safe, happy, and welcome in paradise.

Florida Keys Weather + Dogs = A Heatstroke Waiting to Happen

Let’s cut to the chase: the Florida Keys are hot. Beautiful, yes. But also humid, intense, and not exactly paw-friendly during peak hours. If you’re vacationing in the Keys with a dog, keeping them cool isn’t optional—it’s essential.

Here are a few non-negotiables:

  • Always carry fresh water and a collapsible bowl when you’re out and about.
  • Keep your dog’s fur short (if safe for their breed) during the summer months. Long coats and high humidity don’t mix.
  • Never leave your dog in the car. Not for five minutes. Not with the windows cracked. Florida sun turns cars into ovens in seconds, and sadly, heatstroke can be fatal.

What “Pet-Friendly” Really Means in the Florida Keys

Yes, many restaurants and shops in the Florida Keys are dog-friendly—but that doesn’t mean your dog can lounge on the patio chair or sneak a bite of your mahi sandwich. Every business has its own pet policy. Some allow dogs on outdoor patios only. Some ask that dogs stay on the ground at all times. Most appreciate well-behaved pups on leashes, (and friendly humans who ask first!)

So if you’re traveling to the Florida Keys with your dog, it’s smart to call ahead or check a business’s website to avoid any surprises.

Where I Take My Dogs in the Keys

I’m not big on routines, but I do have a morning tradition: coffee with the dogs. If not at my yard or by the pool, two of my fave dog-friendly cafés to go with my pups are:

  1. Café Moka in Tavernier – Shady seating, coastal breezes, and a peaceful vibe.
  2. Croissants de France in Stock Island – A great stop for pastries, strong coffee, and a pet-welcoming patio.

There are so many pet-friendly spots in the Florida Keys that I couldn’t possibly pick just one favorite. That’s why we put together a guide to the best pet-friendly places in the Keys—restaurants, parks, beaches, and more.

Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or a full-on dogcation, the Keys are ready to welcome both you and your pup.

Check out the guide, grab a leash, and enjoy the islands.

Alright, I’m off—it’s island time, baby!
